Just be sure to check the full terms of the promotional rate; that 0% financing rate may only be for a short term loan, or only applicable on one particular model of car.

Troubleshooting - Help! My Car Won't Start!

Okay so what happens when your car won't start? A gasoline engine needs three key ingredients to operate: Fuel, a spark to ignite the fuel, and some way for the fuel to meet the spark and ignite a fire, this is the compression. Compressing fuel in a confined cylinder inside the engine, then introducing a spark from a spark plug will produce a small explosion. This explosion process is what generates horsepower.

So before you call the mechanic and tell him your car won't start, ask yourself this question first, "What is missing in those three things?" You went out to your car today and the car won't start. Suppose the engine won't turn over. When I say the engine won't turn over, I mean when you turn the key the engine doesn't do anything. The radio and the lights may still be functioning fine.

What are the things that cause the engine to turn over? The battery and the starter are the two most important. If the headlights are on and are bright, then we could probably assume the battery is up to snuff and doing its job. The starter takes electricity from the battery and turns the engine over to start the piston explosion process I described earlier. So in this case there is probably a problem with the starter, or something is hampering the electricity from the battery to the engine or starter (maybe burned or damaged wiring or a bad ground connection).

The other type of problem occurs when the engine turns over like it is trying to start but will not start. So the battery and the starter are doing their jobs, but we are lacking one of the main exploding ingredients. Is there fuel? Look at the gauge first. Do you have compression? Does the engine sound like it is turning over fully, or does the engine sound like it is turning over too fast or too slow? A broken timing belt or timing chain will cause the engine to turn over very easily and very fast because the compression process is not taking place. Is there spark? This is not as easy to determine as it sounds, and can require some tools and experience to test.

Now you probably don't care to do it yourself from here on out, but at least you have ruled out the battery, the starter, and a lack of fuel in the tank. This little bit of effort on your part saves the mechanic a lot of time trying to guess what happened and why, and you might actually find the problem yourself. Is the car in park? I have been to many roadside assists only to find out the car is still in drive. The engine will only start in park and neutral. Do you have an anti-theft device, and is it working properly? If it is a stick shift, do you have the clutch pedal depressed? Are the front tires up against the curb? Sometimes it is very hard to turn the key if the front tires are in a bind on a curb, or if the car has rolled back a bit after it was placed in park. If this is the case, you can turn the steering wheel real hard to the right, or try to physically move or rock the car forward to release the key.

Monthly sales projected to rise 15 percent, J.D. Power says

December is shaping up to show the U.S. industry's strongest year-over-year sales increase of what's been a dismal 2009.

Expect a 15 percent spike in new vehicle sales in December, powered by a retail surge, according to projections released today by industry forecaster J.D. Power and Associates.

“The market is continuing to improve, with the relative strength of December sales supporting a year-end rally,” Gary Dilts, senior vice president of global automotive operations at J.D. Power, said in a statement.

December would be just the third month of 2009 with a sales increase. The others, in August and in
November, had tiny gains. The August advance stemmed from the U.S. cash-for-clunkers incentive program. November and December benefited from comparisons to a market that collapsed at the end of 2008.

Total December sales are projected at 1.03 million vehicles, up from 895,152 a year earlier. J.D. Power expects December retail sales to jump 20 percent to 839,600. Fleet sales should drop by 2.5 percent, or 5,000 vehicles.

The seasonally adjusted annual sales rate for December is tracking at 11.2 million vehicles, Dilts said.
That is higher than November's rate of 10.5 million and it would be third highest of the year, according to the Automotive News Data Center. Total light-vehicle sales in November were 747,086.

J.D. Power based its forecast on sales activity during the first 17 days of the month.
During the first 11 months of the year, U.S. light vehicle sales plunged 24 percent to 9.4 million. Subaru, Hyundai and Kia are the only brands to advance this year.

Introduction

Let’s face it, in the eyes of car enthusiasts convertibles just don’t get much respect. Taking the top off of a sporty coupe is seen as a recipe for appealing to the fairer sex, for whom aesthetic appeal is far more important than tire roasting acceleration or slot car like handling. When Audi announced that it would produce its A5 coupe in a cabriolet for 2010, one could easily interpret this as a blatant move in the hairdresser direction. With the TT roadster aimed more at the sports car segment, the A5 Cabriolet will surely appeal to the well-coiffed crowd.

The only problem with this formula is that like most Audis, the A5 Cabrio is a pretty damn good driver’s car. Sure, it has a less than macho soft-top, but to write this car off as a mere style accessory would be missing the point. After several days of driving twisty, hilly backroads, the only facial expressions we could muster involved lots of grins and smiles. And here in California, where the sun shines most days of the year, we sure don’t mind having the wind in our hair while tearing down the road.

Performance/Handling

For the A5 Cabriolet, VW decided to make its versatile 2.0T 4-cylinder the only available engine. Although power output is a modest 210 hp, there is an ample 258 lb-ft torque available at a low 1500 rpm. Acceleration off the line isn’t exactly head snapping, but once moving this little engine provides more than enough thrust to make things enjoyable. A big benefit to small turbocharged motors is excellent fuel efficiency and the A5 Cabrio doesn’t disappoint, achieving up to 30 mpg on the highway in front-wheel drive configuration. Plus, those looking for sheer speed can always trade-up to the S5 Cabriolet and its 333 hp supercharged V6 engine.

Unfortunately, Audi decided to err on the side of caution and convenience when it comes to shifting, and offers the A5 Cabriolet with either a Multitronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) for front-wheel drive models, or a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic for cars that are equipped with Quattro all-wheel drive. Neither a manual transmission nor VW’s DSG direct shift automatic will be available, at least not in the US. Our test car came with equipped with the 6-speed automatic, which proved perfectly adequate for everyday driving and allows for manual control of shifting through the use of paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel.

Our test car also featured Audi Drive Select, which allows the driver to select from several different settings that control the car’s adaptive suspension, dynamic steering, transmission shift characteristics and engine response. Although we did play around with the settings a bit, the differences are subtle and we left it in automatic mode for most of our testing. Overall, the suspension is nicely balanced and provides good control without giving away much comfort. Steering feel is very light at low speeds, almost alarmingly so, but it does firm up nicely when driving faster and provides a decent amount of feedback once at speed. Chassis stiffness is quite good, especially for a convertible, but hard cornering over uneven pavement will cause the rear end to quiver a bit.

Although the A5 is no lightweight and doesn’t quite dance through the turns, overall cornering grip is impressive and the car is more than capable of attacking a set of switchbacks at a high rate of speed. Much of this Herculean grip is due to the combination of Quattro all-wheel drive and a set of optional 19” wheels shod with super sticky Pirelli P Zero Rosso tires in a wide and ultra low-profile 255/35 fitment. These tires provide so much grip that we could hardly get them to make a peep, even when driving very aggressively on tight and twisty backroads.

DO NOT let Dealer "A" locate your new car from Dealer "B"... Don't do it!

This one little trick is used on purpose. We discourage car buyers from letting Dealer A get your new car from Dealer B. Sometimes due to geography and lack of dealer coverage while buying a car, you may have no choice.

Some dealers routinely locate new cars for car buyers and make them quite happy. But 99% of the time I hear complaints from buyers about this. The complaint ratio is so close to 100% that we tell you to always avoid this situation.

It's a craps shoot and the house always wins. I suggest you just find out who Dealer B is and go buy a car from them. One dealer told me the best advice if a Dealer A offers to locate a your new car from Dealer B, don't sign anything until you've seen the car, or sign a letter of intent that the contract is not binding until you have seen the car and given your ok.

I always hear of games and scams when dealer A has the car shipped from dealer B, because of towing costs, and dealer A loses the holdback to the original Dealer B. All sorts of fees show up.

Even worse, the wrong car shows up and you are stuck buying car you don't want because you put down a deposit! I also get lots of complaints about missing MSRP stickers, which is a felony. You'll eliminate these issues if you buy a car from the dealer who has the car. Search all the dealer web sites for their inventory.

Before you give ANY money, be sure you have a written buyer's order from them clearly stating what new car you are buying, the VIN#, the color, and all the options, so there is no doubt what you are paying for. If they give you bogus lip service about "not knowing the VIN# yet", they are lying.

Automakers are certainly rethinking their current SUV offerings due to rising fuel costs, but Jeep appears to be pressing ahead full speed with an update to its Grand Cherokee SRT-8. Engineers at Chrysler haven’t decided exactly what will need to be changed for the 425 horsepower monster SUV, although it does appear that the front end will be restyled with multiple optional additions.
Pretty significant changes abound and obvious even without a decent look at the back (the engineers are being quite secretive). The exhaust has been moved from the center and is now integrated into the rear bumper on each side. That – and the fact that this prototype is pulling a trailer – leads us to believe that the SRT8 Grand Cherokee will be offered – for the first time – with a towing package.

2010 New Renault Megane RS

The new Megane RS debuted at the Geneva Motor Show 2009 comes in two guises, Sport or Cup. Both receive the same 184kW (250hp) turbocharged 2.0 litre engine and both are driven through the front wheels. The Cup, however, gets a limited-slip differential, which no doubt helps channel all 340Nm (251lb-ft) of torque through both wheels evenly.
Power is now 15kW (20hp) and 40Nm (29.5 lb-ft) higher than that of the old Megane RS, and 80 percent of peak torque is available from as low as 1900rpm thanks to its twin-scroll turbocharger. A six-speed manual is the only gearbox on offer.

Audi R8

Audi has released pricing on the new 2010 Audi R8 and the 2010 Audi R8 5.2-litre V10 FSI quattro. The V10 will be in dealerships later very soon where it will feature a starting price of $146,000 excluding the $1,200 destination charge, taxes, title, and optional extras.

The quattro R8 V10 with the R-Tronic box will cost $155,100. This model features 525-horsepower with 391lb-ft of torque, a 0-100km/h time of 3.7 second and a 196mph top speed.
The 2010 R8 4.2-litre FSI model will feature the same $114,200 pricetag for the manual and the $123,300 for the R-Tronic.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell

Mercedes-Benz is launching its first series-produced fuel cell car on the road: the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell. The environmentally friendly electric car has better a performance similar to than a 2,0-litre petrol car and is fully suited for everyday driving. The zero-emission drive system consumes the equivalent of 3.3 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres in the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle). Production of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell will commence in late 2009 with a small lot. The first of around 200 vehicles will be delivered to customers in Europe and the USA at the beginning of 2010.

The new fuel cell vehicle offers everything that people expect from a Mercedes-Benz: High comfort and safety as well as no reduction in interior space and boot capacity. Customers will not have to sacrifice any driving pleasure either, because the electric motor has a peak performance of 100 kW/136 hp and a maximum torque of 290 Nm, which is available from the first rotation. It ensures that the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell, whose impressive dynamic handling properties are in some cases far better than those of a two-litre petrol car, gets off to an excellent start. Despite these qualities, the zero-emission fuel cell drive consumes the equivalent of only 3.3 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC). Thanks to its great range of about 400 kilometres and short refuelling times of around three minutes, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell ensures local zero-emission mobility even for long stretches.

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell is taking on a pioneering role as the world's first fuel cell powered automobile to be produced under series production conditions", says Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Development for Mercedes-Benz Cars.

With more than 100 test vehicles and a combined total of over 4.5 million kilometres of trial testing, Daimler and Mercedes-Benz have the most extensive experience with fuel cell vehicles of any manufacturer worldwide. The Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell is further testimony of this technology's high level of development for automotive use. However, a comprehensive network of hydrogen filling stations still has to be set up before locally zero-emission driving can become a widespread reality. To make this possible, Daimler is cooperating with government authorities, energy utilities and oil companies in joint projects in places such as Hamburg, Stuttgart and California.

Mercedes-Benz views the development of electric cars with battery and fuel cell drives for local zero-emission driving as a means of supplementing vehicles with high-tech internal combustion engines. Advanced diesel and petrol engines will remain important for automotive applications for a long time to come - not only for individual mobility in passenger cars - especially over long distances - but, more importantly, for freight transport in trucks. Electric vehicles, on the other hand, will increasingly be used in urban transport.
